Biography
  >  >Yovianna García Alvarado was born into a family of musicians in Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1985. She began violin studies at the Escuela Libre de Música Juan Morel Campos at the age of eight and later enrolled in the Instituto de Música Juan Morel Campos to study classical guitar with Santos Torres Toro and Héctor Hernández Maldonado. She later went on to earn a Bachelor of Music Degree in classical guitar performance from the Music Conservatory of Puerto Rico where she studied with Leonardo Egúrbida.

Ms. García has won several awards including: Second Place at the National Classical Guitar Competition in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, the Hernán Rodríguez Medal from the UNESCO Association of Puerto Rico, the Guitar Department and Board of Directors Academic Excellence Award from the Conservatory of Puerto Rico, and various scholarships from the Corporación de las Artes Musicales. García has performed in master classes with artists such as Nicholas Goluses, David Pavlovitz, Iván Rijos, Pavel Steidl, Roland Dyens, Manuel Barrueco, Berta Rojas, René González, Eduardo Fernández and Benjamin Verdery. In 2006, Ms. García founded, organized and performed at the First Annual Classical Guitar Festival in Ponce, Puerto Rico.

Her compositions have been performed by many artists and featured in festivals in Puerto Rico and the United States including most recently; the Annual Women Composers Festival in Hartford, Connecticut; and the Primer Festival de Guitarra Clásica in Ponce, Puerto Rico.

Currently she is pursuing a Master of Music degree in classical guitar performance at the Hartt School of Music with Prof. Richard Provost and Prof. Christopher Ladd. Ms. García teaches classical guitar at The Hartt School Community Division of the University of Hartford, Connecticut.
